Can You Live on $1,000 a Month in Colombia?

By Trevor Hogarth · Last updated October 25, 2026

Can you live on $1,000 a month in Colombia? Yes, but it depends heavily on which city you choose and how you live. In some cities $1,000 covers a simple, comfortable life. In others it barely covers rent in the neighbourhoods most foreigners want.

I’ve lived in Colombia since 2020, in Medellín and Ibagué, and I’ve tracked what everyday life costs across the country. Here’s an honest answer for 2026. If your budget is a bit higher, read my guide on whether you can live on $2,000 a month in Colombia. And if you’re still deciding whether to make the move at all, my story about moving from Canada to Colombia covers how it went for me.

The short answer

  • $1,000 works in mid-sized cities such as Ibagué, Armenia, Manizales and Pereira, if you live simply.
  • $1,000 is tight in Cali, Bucaramanga, Barranquilla, Santa Marta and Medellín. It’s possible, but you’ll be choosing rent and lifestyle carefully.
  • $1,000 is not realistic for most foreigners in Bogotá or Cartagena.

A real $1,000 monthly budget

This is what $1,000 a month looks like for one person in a mid-sized city like Ibagué, Armenia or Manizales:

CategoryMonthly cost (USD)
Rent (1-bedroom apartment)400
Utilities and internet90
Groceries220
Transportation50
Eating out and entertainment120
Private health insurance120
Total1,000

That leaves very little room for travel, flights home or emergencies. On $1,000, most people live like locals: menú del día lunches, local markets, buses, and occasional nights out instead of frequent ones.

Where $1,000 a month goes furthest

These ranges come from the city guides on this site and show the typical budget lifestyle for one person:

CityBudget lifestyle (USD/month)Does $1,000 work?
Ibagué700 – 1,000Yes
Armenia750 – 1,100Yes
Manizales750 – 1,100Yes
Pereira800 – 1,200Yes, living simply
Cali800 – 1,200Tight
Bucaramanga800 – 1,200Tight
Barranquilla850 – 1,250Tight (air conditioning adds up)
Santa Marta850 – 1,300Tight
Medellín900 – 1,200Tight, and only outside El Poblado
Bogotá900 – 1,300Difficult
Cartagena1,000 – 1,400Not realistic for most

I’ve lived in Ibagué, and it’s a good example of how far money goes outside the big tourist cities. Rent is lower, food is cheap, and the weather is warm without the coastal humidity. You can read more in my Ibagué cost of living guide.

How to make $1,000 a month work

  • Rent unfurnished and sign a longer lease. Furnished short-term apartments aimed at foreigners often cost noticeably more than local rentals.
  • Look at estrato 3 and 4 neighbourhoods. Colombian utilities are priced by estrato (a 1–6 neighbourhood rating). Estrato 5 and 6 areas cost more in rent and in utility bills.
  • Eat like a local. A menú del día lunch usually costs a fraction of a restaurant dinner, and local markets are far cheaper than imported products at the supermarket.
  • Avoid the coast if heat drives up your bills. In Barranquilla, Cartagena and Santa Marta, running air conditioning can add a lot to your electricity bill.
  • Use buses and shared transport. Ride-hailing apps add up quickly over a month.

The visa catch most people miss

This is the part many budget articles leave out. Living on $1,000 a month is one thing; qualifying for a visa on $1,000 a month is another.

Colombia’s pension visa requires a guaranteed lifetime pension of at least three times the minimum wage. In 2026 that is 5,252,715 pesos a month, roughly 1,680 USD. The digital nomad visa is also based on a multiple of the minimum wage. In other words, if $1,000 a month is your total income, you probably won’t qualify for the most common income-based visas.

Options people use instead include tourist stays (many nationalities, including Canadians and Americans, can stay up to 90 days, extendable to 180 days per calendar year), a spouse or partner visa, or an investment visa. Always check the current requirements on Cancillería’s website or with an immigration lawyer.

Is $1,000 a month enough for a couple?

For a couple it’s very tight. Rent doesn’t double, but groceries, health insurance and transport do. Most couples are much more comfortable at $1,500 to $2,000 a month, even in cheaper cities. Use the Colombia Cost of Living Calculator to test your own numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Is $1,000 a lot of money in Colombia?

Compared with local wages, yes. The 2026 minimum wage is 1,750,905 pesos a month, about 560 USD. But foreigners usually spend more than locals on rent, health insurance and imported goods, so $1,000 is a modest budget, not a luxurious one.

What is the cheapest city in Colombia for foreigners?

Of the cities covered on this site, Ibagué has the lowest typical budget, followed by Armenia and Manizales.

Can you retire in Colombia on $1,000 a month?

You can live on it in a smaller city, but $1,000 is below the 2026 pension visa requirement of about 1,680 USD a month.
